Reflection on the work of this semester

As for projects, the completion of each project in this semester is not as good as that in the previous semester. The main reason is that this semester is busy participating in various induction tests, and these test projects are not allowed to be disclosed. In fact, if the test is included, the total number of projects produced in this semester is still a lot, but it’s a pity that the projects in the school are not completed completely, In my spare time of holiday, I will continue to work for some unfinished work.At present, I have found an internship job, and I think this problem will continue to accompany me next semester. I should learn to better balance the time spent on work tasks and the time spent on learning tasks, and try to achieve perfection on both sides

As for blogs, I have been very serious to complete each work every semester, I spent a lot of time and patience in the production process to make and modify each work. But I am not good at writing, especially English writing. Every time I write my blog, I feel very distressed. Every time I only know how to show my works, but I don’t know how to describe my production process. I encountered the same problem this semester, but I consulted crystal. She told me that her experience was that I should let blogging and animation go on at the same time. She said that I focused too much on my work every time. I didn’t start blogging until I finished all the production, As a result, I didn’t leave a screenshot in the production process or forgot some details in the production process when I finished. I think her opinions are very useful to me. Next time I will try to record every step I take in the production process.

FMP and Thesis Presentation

At present, the common animation works in the world are mainly divided into American animation and Japanese animation two styles. Because of the high production cost of 2D Japanese animation, the development of Japanese unique animation style is very difficult for a period of time. However, in recent years, with the cel-shading technology come out, Japanese animation has gradually found its own new way out, using 3D technology to produce the picture effect of 2D animation. This new form of animation has given me great inspiration and has always been the main direction of my study and research. At present, there are no works with distinct styles in China’s animation works, but China has always had its own unique and long history of ink painting style art.I have studied ink painting, and I like the style of ink painting very much. I wonder if we can use cel-shading technology to make unique Chinese style animation

As early as the first TERM, I began to study cel shading and tried to make cel shading materials. But at that time, I only achieved the effect of rendering 3D models to a plane, and I didn’t go deep into the artistic style of cel shading. This time, I want to try to use cel shading technology to make 3D art works of Chinese ink painting style that I learned before.

In the process of investigation, I found such a group of 3D art works. It was made in 3D, but its picture style was full of the beauty of Chinese art. The final works I wanted to make would be presented in a style similar to this group of pictures

At present, my plan for my graduation project is: I will make a short animation, which is mainly used to show my unique Chinese art rendering style. The work is mainly composed of one scene and one character. I want to make a short animation of an old man sitting on a boat fishing in the river, but this animation will not have too complicated story line, which is basically the animation of a person fishing. This is my current idea.

In my thesis, I will study and discuss the characteristics of Chinese ink painting art different from western art, and discuss and analyze what characteristics Chinese ink painting style works need to have in 3D works. Then I would like to discuss and describe the key technical points that I have summarized in the production of such works of art.

I think I’m quiet good at making 3D scenes, but I haven’t made any big breakthrough, and my works don’t have any special shining point, so this time I want to learn how to make a unique style of 3D art works and put them into showreel as my advantage project which is different from others. On the other hand, I always like cel shading style 3D works. I want to learn this kind of style technology and join the team of making this kind of style animation in the future.

week9 Early research and ideas on FMP

1 Decide what kind of theme to do for FMP

2 Some researches on Chinese painting

3 Decide what kind of story to make

In my presentation, I explained in detail why I wanted to do such an animation. At the beginning, I intended to do some regular animation to tell a story, but I also wanted to do something that I had never done before, because I knew that I would rarely have the opportunity to do what I just wanted to do in my future work. So I’m going to challenge myself to make a 3D animation with ink style.

2 Some researches on Chinese painting

After determining that the topic should be based on Chinese style animation, I made a simple study on the types and characteristics of Chinese painting.

According to the subject matter of painting, traditional Chinese painting mainly includes landscape painting, flower and bird painting, and figure painting. The painting of Lushan Mountain by Gu Kaizhi in Jin Dynasty is a landscape painting, the painting of cold bird by Cui Bai is a flower and bird painting, and the painting of listening to Qin by song Huizong is a figure painting. According to the form of expression, traditional Chinese painting can be divided into freehand brushwork and fine brushwork. Fine brushwork pays attention to “work”, which needs a detailed outline and repeated rendering. It is relatively realistic and complicated. Freehand brushwork stresses “meaning”,

Because freehand brushwork style of ink painting is very difficult for 3Dl modeling, so I finally decided to make a fine brushwork style of ink 3D effect.

In this way, the object modeling is still its original shape, and the ink style is mainly reflected in the mapping ,lighting, and rendering effect

3 Decide what kind of story to make

Since I choose to make a Chinese-style animation, I hope the story of this animation is also very Chinese style. China likes to tell metaphorical stories. It doesn’t tell the theme of the story clearly, but let the audience experience the story by themselves.

There is a famous story about fishing in ancient China

Jiang Taigong is a popular name for Jiang Ziya, statesman and strategist.

As an adviser of King Wen of the Zhou State in ancient China, he, at the age of 80, helped the young King Wu overthrow the Shang Dynasty and establish the Zhou Dynasty.Jiang Ziya lived near the Weishui River about 3 000 years ago.

The area was the feudal estate of Count Ji Chang.

Jiang Ziya knew Ji Chang was very ambitious so he hoped to get Ji’s attention.He often went fishing at the Weishui River,but he would fish in an unusual way. He hung a straight fishhook, without bait, three feet above the water .

He often said to himself, “Fish,if you don’t want to live any more, come and swallow the hook yourself. ”

Soon his strange way of fishing was reported to Ji Chang.

Ji sent a soldier to fetch him.Jiang saw the soldier conning, but ignored him.

Jiang just went on with his fishing, and was saying to himself,“Fishing, fishing,no fish has been hooked. A shrimp is up to mischief. ”

The soldier reported this back to Ji Chang, who became more interested in Jiang.Ji sent an official to invite Jiang this time.But Jiang again ignored the invitation.He just carried on fishing,and was saying,“Fishing,fishing,the big fish has not been hooked. A small one is up to mischief”

Then Ji Chang realized Jiang may be a great talent so he went to invite Jiang himself and brought many generous gifts with him.Jiang saw his sincere desire so decided to work for him.Jiang helped Ji Chang and his son turn over the Shang Dynasty and establish the Zhou Dynasty.

Today, people use this old idiom to describe someone who willingly falls in a trap or does something regardless of the result

Another reason why I want to do this fishing story is that I have a wonderful experience with fishing. Before I came to England, I always dreamed of a big fish for a week. I don’t understand why. The day before I set out to England, I went to the lake to fish once. Again, I never really fished before. But on that day, a big fish got hooked, which was very big, with a weight of 5 kg. This fantastic experience has always impressed me deeply. I suddenly thought that since I was going to leave England after FMP, I wanted to make a final story about this fish.

week8 personal project 3.0

The problem I encountered in making cheetah running animation is

1. Time is running out. In the test, I need to submit two animations, walking and running animations of quadrupeds. When making the animation of wolf walking, I made it very carefully and took a long time, because the animation of wolf walking is also my personal project this semester. But because the first animation took a long time, I only have half a day to make the second quadruped running animation. This animation is obviously rougher than the previous one. I should plan reasonably in the early stage.

2. The second problem I encountered is the problem of model threading. As shown in the figure below, when the leopard’s leg is straightforward, the model of the front leg and the model of the back are a little distorted. I can’t solve this problem. I think part of the reason is because of the model, and part of the reason is that I don’t have better control over the key nodes of the back, But due to the limited time, I didn’t have time to change the model or check every bone at that time. I will try to modify this animation again during the holiday.

week7 personal project 2.0

Feedback on this animation production

In the process of making the wolf walking animation, I found that I think the key part of animal animation is the animation of the back. Whether a quadruped walking animation is natural enough or not is mainly due to the reasonable movement of the back. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time on the animation of the limbs, but there has been no way to make the wolf walking look real Until I started to adjust the movement of the wolf’s back.

Feedback on personal project

In addition to making personal projects, I took part in many entrance examinations this semester. There are some examinations for scene production and some for animation production. I made a lot of tests, big and small, such as the gasoline tank model of the science fiction world, the giant creature fighting animation, and so on. I wanted to write these test assignments in my blog as part of my personal project, but the topics of my induction tests were confidential, I also asked the company if I could put the test works into my personal works display. Unfortunately, the answer was no, because these tests need to be strictly confidential.

One of the random topics that the company gave me was the walking and running animation of quadrupeds. It’s just my target project in this semester, but this company requires me to complete this animation independently, and I can’t ask for other people’s help, so in the production process of this animation in this semester, I didn’t continue to ask the teacher to help me correct my animation, but completed my animation independently, for the fairness of the exam. I plan to ask the teacher to help me correct and guide this animation action after I finish this exam.

Fortunately, although I didn’t spend more time studying my personal projects this semester because of too many job tests, I got an internship offer from a company after many tests

week6 personal project 1.0

Before the beginning

This semester I want to try some animation that I haven’t done before and I’m not good at. I chose to make an animal animation. The initial idea is to make three animations, animals flying in the sky, animals running on the ground, and animals swimming in the water. But after the first tutorial, I realized that I should focus on carefully making an action animation. A high-completion animation is better than three low-completion animations.

Finally, I decided to make an animation of the wolf walking

The movement law of quadruped summarized after online investigation and research

Quadrupeds can be divided into claws and ungulates.

Claws, generally carnivores. There are long animal hair on the body, sharp claws on the toes, and elastic muscles on the soles of the feet. He has a violent temperament. The body has flexible muscles and soft fur on the surface. It is good at running and jumping, flexible in movement, and changeable in posture. For example Lion, tigers, leopards, wolves, foxes, dogs, cats, etc.

Ungulates are generally herbivores. There are hard foot shells (hoofs) on the feet, and some of them have a pair of weapons for self-defense – horns. He is gentle and easy to tame. The body muscles are strong, the movements are vigorous and straight, and the body shape changes little. He who can run is good at running. For example horses, cattle, sheep, deer, antelope, etc.

The basic movement law of quadrupeds

Walking — most of the mammals belong to four-legged “toe walking” or “hoof walking” animals

Warm your toes and walk. Its basic movement law can be divided into the following parts

(1) The four legs are divided and closed, and the left and right sides alternate to form a complete step

(2) When the forefoot is raised, the wrist joint bends backward; When the hindfoot is raised, the ankle joint bends forward. (3) when walking, due to the bending and extension of the leg joints, the body has slight ups and downs.

(4) When walking, in order to coordinate the movement of legs and maintain the balance of the center of the body, the head will move up and down slightly. Generally, when stepping out of the front foot and about to land, the head will start to move downward,

(5) Because of the soft and soft fur, the outline of joint movement of claws is not obvious

The joint movement of hoofed animals is more obvious, the outline is clear, and it appears hard and straight.

  • (6)In the process of animal walking, we should pay attention to the high and low radians of toes when they fall to the ground and leave the ground.

Body characteristics: when the front leg is raised, the wrist joint is bent backward, when the rear leg is raised, the ankle joint is bent forward, and the four legs are divided into two parts to form a complete step. When walking, the body changes height due to the movement of the legs. Usually, when the forelegs step on the ground, the head will move downward to maintain the balance of the body. The claw animals such as lion, tiger, and leopard are soft because of their weak joint movement, while the hoofed animals such as horses, sheep, and deer are stiff because of their obvious joint movement.

Key frame decomposition of walking of claw quadrupes

The action difference between wolf and dog

When I watched and looked for the guidance video, I found that most people choose dogs first when making quadrupeds, which made me suddenly think about the difference between wolves and dogs in action. Finally, I found that the biggest difference between the two similar animals in movement is the movement of the tail. The tail of the wolf is low most of the time, but the tail of the dog is very active. Secondly, when walking, the head of the dog is often higher than that of the wolf.

week5 Collaboration project:Game photography

In this semester, in addition to the cooperation projects with students in ourclass, I also completed two small projects with two students majoring in photography. I met Liu and Lou at a birthday dinner. One of them chose game photography, the other chose 3D photography. But when we talk to each other, I found that one of them very seldom play games and the other couldn’t build 3D models. When they knew that I was a 3D animation major and a game enthusiast, they invited me to cooperate with them to complete the project. I also felt very strange about the photography project of non-real photography, so we finally decided to cooperate to complete these two photography projects.

1 create an interactive exhibition of game photography

2 help friends create a concept photography scene in 3D

The first is Liu’s game photography assignment. She needs to shoot in the game scene. The game she chose is Assassin’s Creed. I helped her to complete some difficult levels, so that she can explore in the game scene in a wider range, and we selected some beautiful scenes to shoot together.

Then what I mainly helped her to complete was that she conceived a realistic interactive exhibition, but because of the epidemic situation, this exhibition could not really be realized in school, so she invited me to help her display the exhibition in 3D. She wants to have a black room in a white room with a running game console and a comfortable sofa. In other areas of the exhibition are her game photos. Her exhibition wants to express that with the development of game making, more and more people live in the game world. For them, the game world is the real world, and people experience another life in the game.

Here’s a 3D scene I build for her exhibition

2 Lou wants to build a scene in 3D and take photos. He can use part of C4d, but he is not proficient enough. They hope that we can cooperate to complete the 3D part.

He gave me such a picture and told me that it was his reference. He wanted a black, virtual figure in a smoky scene.

Because he is more familiar with the use of C4d, so this time in order to cooperate with him, I also choose to use C4d to complete the 3D scene. I searched for some preset C4d scenes and lights on the Internet, modified and rendered them according to Lou’s requirements, and made the following three pictures.

Then we had a discussion. He told me that he wanted the character not to have a specific shape. He wanted it to be a fuzzy shadow. At the same time, he wanted some old photo textures on the screen. I told him that the effects he wanted to achieve in 3D are not easy, and I think these effects can be achieved in the re editing of photos. I gave him the following demonstration

First of all, I toned the photo and added some grainy effects to make it look more retro.

Then I used the brush to blur the figure so that it didn’t look like a specific shape.

Finally, I added a scratch mask to the photo to make it look more like a real old

photo.

In the end, he was very satisfied with the effect of the finished product, but I couldn’t help him finish all his homework directly, so I only showed it for him once, and the rest of the pictures were edited and adjusted by him.

Feedback

This cooperation has taught me that when we want to produce an effect, but it is difficult to achieve it with the software currently used, I should flexibly try to solve the problem from another angle, change the software for another method, sometimes things will become much simpler, and the software tools are never single, More understanding of the use of different kinds of software also helps us to create different styles of works.

week4 collaboration project:AR Cyberpunk

1 Cyberpunk scene

2 Reflection on cooperative projects

This cooperation project has not been completed completely. Our original idea is to unify the characters and the scene into a real scene interactive ar scene. However, due to the unfinished scene, the last ar interaction has not been realized. In last semester’s cooperation task, from the design of characters and scenes to the production of models were completed by crystal and me. She made characters and I made scenes. Our original design styles were very similar, so the cooperation was very smooth. This semester, we invited more people to join us, and we encountered some new problems. For example, Jianyu and I completed the same scene up and down the stairs together, but our modeling styles were very different. As a result, the downstairs and upstairs looked like two scenes, so that the scene modeling could not be completed completely. Secondly, the previous pre-setting was completed by myself, so I knew exactly what I needed when modeling. But this time, the pre-setting was completed by Yufei, and he didn’t discuss all the settings in detail at the beginning. As a result, he had to modify the original design many times according to our opinions. The cooperation with crystal last semester, because we are very familiar with each other, sometimes we don’t need too much communication to know what effect and design each other wants. But this semester’s cooperation project makes me realize that early communication is very important, full communication can make us fewer detours in the production of the project. When working with unfamiliar people, you should first understand other people’s work habits, so as to better cooperate.

Although we encountered some bumps in the production process, our cooperation is very happy. When problems arise, we always solve them together. Thank my team members for supporting me all the time.

week3 Collaboration project:AR Cyberpunk

1 Discussion on character design with Yufei Zheng

1.

First of all, the following is Yufei’s first version of the character design and some of our discussion process screenshots. His design is very good and personalized, but there are also many problems. First of all, the biggest problem is that this cartoon image is not suitable for our scene. It heads big as its body, but our scene props are made in real person proportion. We can’t use too cartoon images. Second, the character set we discussed earlier is a crazy young genius scientific doctor, But the character has no obvious age characteristics and is not very much like a teenager. So I had a discussion with Yufei and asked him to reset the role.

The following is Yufei’s design to be modified after our discussion and the final model style of crystal.

2 Discussion on scene making with Jianyu

2.

The production of the scene is planned to be completed jointly by Jianyu and me. She will complete the production of the second floor and I will complete the production of the first floor.

Jianyu’s design is excellent, the scene is full of details, but there are also some problems. For example, the design of the study area on the second floor is not enough future. The computer on the desk is old-fashioned, and the air conditioner is old-fashioned. Moreover, I think paper books may have been replaced in the future. In addition, the models made by Jianyu, whether they are built by herself or the materials used, have not developed UV. The amount of UV production is also very large, which affects the subsequent production of mapping materials. The following is part of the model diagram made by Jianyu
